Interpretation is the action of explaining the meaning of something. Interpretation servicesare essential in bridging communication gaps. There are several types of interpretation services. How do you decide which option is best for your needs?

When deciding which interpretation services are best for you, consider the following:

Cost

Scope

Speed/Demand

Equipment Use

We’ll take a look at each type of interpretation services and the advantages and disadvantages of each!

CONSECUTIVE INTERPRETATION

Consecutive interpretation is one type of in-person interpretation. During consecutive interpretation, a speaker pauses after completing an idea and the interpreter proceeds to translate what was said. Consectuive interpretation works well with smaller meetings, doctor appointments, parent-teacher conferences, school testing, or other appointments. This solution is more costly than bringing in an interpreter remotely via video conferencing or over the phone. However, being in person might make the speaker feel more at ease. It also allows the interpreter to read body language and facial expressions. Consecutive interpretation is also best when scheduled in advance. It is best to give as much notice as possible to your language service provider.

SIMULTANEOUS INTERPRETATION

When thinking about simultaneous interpretation, you might think of the person standing to the side of a world leader and signing his or her speech as it is happening. Simultaneous interpretation is great for large groups, especially when there is a Q&A portion afterwards. Simultaneous interpretation is more expensive than consecutive interpretation due to the art and science of this interpretation type. The interpreter is able to preserve the intonation, style, and inflection of the speaker. Depending on the size, location, and duration of the event, equipment such as microphones and head sets may also be used or required.

VIDEO INTERPRETATION

Video interpretation can be very convenient and cost effective when compared to in-person interpretation (consecutive or simultaneous) since you will not have to bring someone in to the location. With this type of interpretation, thought, you lose the ability of an interpreter to really read expressions and body language. Video interpretation requires equipment. If your office or meeting space has the equipment for video conferencing, than that is a great option. There are also easier-to-use and more readily available tools such as Google Translate or Skype. Sometimes, doctors offices or classrooms or may not have this type of equipment, so other options might be better for your needs.

OVER THE PHONE INTERPRETATION

Over the phone interpretation (OPI) is definitely cost effective when compared to in-person interpretation (consecutive or simultaneous). However, like with video interpretation, you lose that “in person” feel and it is difficult to read body language and facial expressions. There are no “set up fees” and you are only billed for the amount that you use. You are charged by the minute, and the per minute rate decreases the more you use the service per month. Whereas video interpretation might require a bit more equipment, with OPI, all you need is a phone. This makes things much easier! OPI is also available 24/7, so this solution is great for when you need an interpreter “on demand.”

We hope you find this guide to interpretation services helpful. If you’re still a bit confused on which option works best for your needs, feel free to contact one of our representatives. We’d be happy to help you!
