I officially graduated from university with a degree in Spanish and Business Studies in November 2016 and entered the big wide world of work straight after finishing my degree. I started working in a sales role which I enjoyed, but soon realised that it wasn’t what I wanted to do as my career. As soon as I found an Account Executive role within a translation company, I didn’t think I could find a more perfect fit – a role where I could use my business skills alongside my language skills.
Language career options
After completing a translation module at university, completing many translations in my other Spanish classes and enduring various terrifying interpreting exams throughout my four years at the University of Chester; I thought I had a good knowledge of the translation process, until I started working at Eging Translation.
Using technology in translation
As a perhaps naïve language student I assumed that all linguists would be sat with their Oxford dictionaries, looking up words and phrases they didn’t know and constantly researching background information to aid them with their translations. I am not saying linguists don’t do this, however, I never knew that machine translation existed; or that translation memory was used in the industry; or that all professional linguists use CAT (Computer Assisted Translation) tools. It is an extremely fascinating process for me.
I think the fact I’m learning new things about the translation industry every single day is amazing, as well as hearing about lots of exciting new innovative projects we are currently working on within Eging Translation.
We all know that technology is becoming more advanced and I get to see this first hand every day.
I am now five months into my role in the account management team, and even though I’m still constantly learning new things about the language industry, I have already learnt an awful lot in a short space of time. I am starting to manage my own accounts alongside the Account Managers within our team, gaining new skills and learning new processes each day.
I can’t wait to have my own clients and be able to help them with their translation requirements, offer my advice on which service will suit them best and be their first port of call.
