The official language of Colombia is Spanish, and this language is spoken by all but a few Amerindian tribes. As written and spoken by educated Colombians, this version of Spanish is generally considered the closest to Castilian in Latin America.

The Republic of Colombia (República de Colombia) with its population of more than 46 million people as at the year 2014, sits at the northern tip of South America: it’s a country of towering mountains, lush rainforest, and coffee plantations. Colombia’s neighboring countries include Venezuela and Brazil to the east, Panama to the northwest, and Ecuador and Peru to the southwest. 90% of Colombia’s population are Roman Catholic.
The Zona Rosa district of the capital city of Colombia, Bogotá, is home to fabulous shopping, restaurants and bars. Bogotá is the second largest capital city in all of South America and, at 8,661 ft., it’s one of the world’s highest capital cities.
On the Caribbean coast we have Cartagena, featuring a walled colonial Old Town, amazing beaches, and even a 16th-century castle. A very popular and huge yearly Carnival is held in nearby culture-rich Barranquilla.
Three Andean ranges run north and south through the western half of Colombia. The eastern half of Colombia is a jungle-covered low-lying plain, drained by spurs from both the Orinoco and Amazon rivers. This region is mostly inhabited by isolated Indian tribes. The most densely populated parts of Colombia are the valley and fertile plateau of the eastern range.

Colombia is the only South American country with both Pacific and Caribbean coastlines. Consisting of a total area of 1,138,910 square km, Colombia is the fourth-largest country in South America. The islands of Gorgona, Malpelo and Gorgonilla in the Pacific Ocean, Providencia in the Caribbean Sea, and the archipelago of San Andreas are also held by the Republic of Colombia – even though they’re claimed by Nicaragua. Colombia also holds the uninhabited Caribbean islands of Roncador Cay, Sueño Bank, and Serrana Bank: The United Nations renounced all rights to these islands under the Treaty of Quita Sueño, which was ratified in July 1981 by the United States Senate.
