Turkish Cypriots were able to communicate in Greek, with a surprising amount of aged Greek Cypriots understanding some Turkish, that is until the 1970s. But political conflict slowly and surely resulted in an increase in linguistic barriers. With the animosity increasing, it was considered nothing short of unpatriotic to speak the enemy’s language. And now, after many years of near-absolute separation, no young Turkish Cypriots communicate in any way in Greek and very few Greek Cypriots can understand Turkish.

Nicosia is divided by ‘The Green Line’ - quite similar to the way Berlin was once divided. In the past, access between the two parts of Cyprus was restricted, but today it’s generally problem free. The major port of Larnaca is located on the south-east coast of Cyprus, and this is where many tourists arrive.
Is Cyprus Part of Greece?
Although Cyprus does have extensive cultural ties with Greece, it’s not under Greek control. Between the years of 1925 and 1960 Cyprus was a British colony. Prior to that (from 1878) it was under British administrative control, and for most of the preceding several hundred years it was under Ottoman Empire control. It’s true that the financial crisis in Greece does affect the entire region, Cyprus is not effected any more than other nations or areas.
What Currency Is Used in Cyprus?
The Euro was adopted as the official currency of Cyprus in January 2008; however, most merchants except a wide variety of foreign currency. Northern Cyprus still has the New Turkish Lira as its official currency.
